"Eye Of The Tiger" (First Impressions)
Sushi Jo in Boynton Beach was recommended to me by a friend who used to be in the restaurant industry. They have four locations: one in Boynton Beach, one in West Palm Beach, one in Lake Clarke Shores, and one in Juno Beach.
I went to the one at the end of Boynton Beach, right near the beach in a strip mall. It’s a very intimate venue, with a sushi bar, about 6 tables inside with overhanging, dimly lit bulbs, and a few outside tables.
There are also great happy hour specials from 4:30-6:00 every day.
If you’re looking for sushi in Boynton Beach, this is a great place to start.
“Hungry Like the Wolf” (The Food)
A few interesting things on the menu were sashimi pizza and lobster miso soup, among others.
They serve lots of sushi you don’t usually see on menus, such as hirame (fluke), saba (mackerel), kampachi (amberjack), Japanese snapper, ama ebi (sweet shrimp) and quail egg.
There’s also a bit of fusion going on, such as a Havana Roll (with mango and avocado), a Bahama Roll (with conch) and a Caliente Roll (with jalapeño and kimchi sauce to hike-up the heat factor).
No Wonder It's Called the "Triple Crown Roll"
I started off with a classic tuna roll and a Triple Crown Roll.
The tuna roll was good, fresh quality — which made me happy, since it can be hard to find high quality tuna.
The Triple Crown roll is a great name since not only did it contain three types of fish — yellowtail, tuna and salmon — it was a real winner as well. The roll was perfectly balanced with creamy avocado and orange tobiko for texture.
Get the Fluke (Hirame) Sushi
My favorite sushi was fluke (hirame). I haven’t had it since I lived back in Brooklyn, where it was on virtually every Japanese restaurant’s menu.
This was the first time I’ve seen it in Florida, where wahoo and mahi-mahi are the main whitefish.
Sushi Jo’s fluke had a nice and supple soft thickness to it. So good, I ended up eating 5 pieces.
“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” (Final Verdict)
